Exhibition: “Princely Traditions and Colonial Pursuits in India”

LACMA

“Princely Traditions and Colonial Pursuits in India” focusses on the evolution of South Asian artistic practices throughout the colonial period of the 19th century. South Asian artists adjusted their practices to the colonial taste, English artists and expats introduced new genres and pictorial styles to India and, as a result of exotism, foreign demand for Indian luxury items started booming. This interesting dynamic is on display through rarely-seen artworks from LACMA’s South and Southeast Asian, Costume and Textiles, and European Painting and Sculpture Departments.
