Exhibition: “From Corsets to Playsuits – Women’s Outdoor Clothing 1880-1940″

In 1900 women from all walks of life dressed in ankle-length skirts and tightly laced corsets. Within just forty years they were practicing winter sports in long trousers and sweaters or cycling in shorts and playsuits. Suddenly bare legs and deep necks and backs had appeared. How did this happen? What was the role of movement and nature? How did women’s place in society change? The period 1880-1940 was a tumultous time that affected how women dressed and how they practiced sports and recreation. This exhibition explores that change in over 70 garments used for ice skating, skiing, swimming, sunbathing and vacations.
